[ Global Vector Control ] SumiLarv Mosquito Larvicide
Sumilarv® is an innovative product developed by Sumitomo Chemical for the control of all types of mosquito larvae.  Its unique mode of action prevents the emergence of adult mosquitoes from the immature, aquatic larval stages.

Sumilarv contains the insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen, which is active and long lasting at very low dose rates.  Its high specificity for insect control means that it poses minimal risk to mammals, birds and fish.

The favourable safety profile of Sumilarv permits it to be applied to drinking water for the control of mosquito larvae.  It is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for this application, and through the WHOPES scheme.

Biological Performance of Sumilarv

Many laboratory and field trials have been conducted across the world using Sumilarv.  Here are just a few examples:

Peru:  Trials showed that Aedes aegypti were controlled for >5 months in water storage tanks
Potential use of pyriproxyfen for control of Aedes aegypti in Iquitos, Peru. Sihuincha, M. et al., J. Med. Entomol. Vol. 42, no. 4. 2005

Malaysia:  Trials showed 100% control of Aedes aegypti for 4 months and >93-100% control for >4 months in 60 litre earthenware jars. Water was taken and replaced regularly to simulate normal usage of storage jars. In field studies, 100% control was obtained for 10 weeks against Aedes albopictus despite water being taken and replaced daily or weekly.
Laboratory and field evaluation of the insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen (Sumilarv 0.5G) against dengue vectors. Vythilingam, I. et al., J. Amer. Mosq. Cont. Assoc. 21 (3);296-300, 2005

Sri Lanka:  Field trials against malaria vectors Anopheles culicifaces and Anopheles subpictus indicated that a single treatment of Sumilarv inhibited the emergence of adult mosquitoes in riverbed pools for 190 days. The treatment caused a significant reduction in mosquito populations, and the incidence of malaria was reduced in the treatment villages by about 70%.
